As a journalist for a tourist magazine (Op Lemen Voeten) in Holland and an author of walking guides about Portugal for the Dutch and Belgian public, I want to express my concern about the recent developments on wind energy in Portugal. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the current discussion in your country about this very important issue. Despite the fact that I am strongly in favour of the development of renewable sources of energy, I am opposed to the way it is implemented in your country. Portugal has some of the most outstanding natural parks and reserves of Europe. It is a unique landscape with a mixture of Atlantic, continental en Mediterranean climatologic influences. Each of the parks has its own characteristics (landscape, fauna, flora). Why does your country give up so easily this important heritage by allowing to build wind parks within the limits of areas which have the status of protected landscape, such as Serra d’Aire e Candeeiros, Serra da Estrela, Serra do Alvão, Costa Vicentina, nearby the Serra da Peneda and now maybe in Montesinho. There are some strong arguments against this:
- wind energy can never be the only solution regarding renewable sources of energy, while the consequences for the landscape are irreversible. Planning carefully is therefore of the greatest importance. - natural parks comprise less than 1/5 of the area of Portugal. So it is not necessary to start in these particular areas. - the economic advantages for the local population have to be compared to the eventual loss of revenues from tourism in the concerning areas. Portugal will be less and less interesting as a holiday country for nature loving foreigners.
It is my prediction that in a few years time the current euphoria concerning wind energy in Portugal will make place for great concern about the increased messiness of your country. I sincerely hope that you will be able to counteract this development. For the generations to come the preservation of unspoiled landscapes are as important as the development of sustainable energy.

Talvez...?
